Evaluation Question 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The main character in our media product is a teenager girl called Emily Everson . She is murdered and has to figure out who killed her and why. The character she represents and is compared to is Susie Salmon (played by Saoirse Ronan) from the film the lovely bones.

Susie Salmon:  The character from The Lovely Bones is a teenage girl who was murdered. She spends the film watching over her family and her murderer. She is a ghost who can't 'move on' because she needs to help her family find her murderer. She wears normal clothing that a teenager would wear, jeans and jumpers etc. She has to learn to balance her thirst for revenge with her desire for her family to heal.

Emily Everson: Our character is similar to Susie in many ways, she is also a teenager Girl who has been murdered and is a ghost that can't 'move on'. However the differences between them is that Emily doesn't know who her murderer is and her main reason for not being able to 'move on' is that she needs to find out who murdered her and why. Emily also wears normal clothing that a teenager would wear. Both character have the film based around them and their murder.

Below is a screen grab of our character and the character Susie Salmon. Although their clothing isn't to similar, they are both wearing typical teenager clothing.

Evaluation question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our media product develops the conventions of a general Fantasy film film opening. When looking at fantasy film openings we noticed that there were various long shots and close up shots. Looking at our screen grab of 9 different points in our film, it uses a variety of different shots. Shots 2 and 3 show the main character and her friends and their expressions and body language, this is vital in showing the audience how the characters are feeling.

Most of the screen grabs are long shots, this sets the scene and shows the location of the characters which is vital to the fantasy genre. Spacious sets leave room for the character to move freely and any other characters to enter; since it is so open it also leaves a lot of room for sudden things to happen which builds tension.

The lighting in the scenes is usually quite dark which helps build up the tension about what is going to happen. As most of the shots are filmed outside at night the only light you get is the dim light from the street lights on the streets, this makes the mood eerie and again builds up the tension about what is going to happen.

By using normal conventions of a fantasy movie this should help to set the film well, it would be within the audiences expectations and therefore would be pleasing to them. However the opening is original enough that it will not be boring and predictable.

Music

The music we will use in our final media product will be Royalty Free Music.

Film name

After a lot of arguing we have finally decided on a name for our film. Our film name is 'Dead Alive', this is because it plays on the fact that although she was murdered she hasn't 'moved on' and so could be seen as still alive if you didn't know any better. We wanted our film name to be very obviously linked to what our film was about.

Summary of filming

Day 1:

Our first day of filming was quite successful, we filmed all we needed to film for all of the scenes, even managing to film some scenes a few times so make sure we would have enough footage to edit together.

Day 2:

After looking back over all the footage, we decided to re-film some bits and film more of certain scenes. We also decided to edit in a scream instead of filming one as there were a few houses near by and we didn't want to cause any issues.
